Sterilising Glass Jars

To sterilise glass jars for storing or preserving food, first wash the jars and lids in hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly with hot water, then place them in an oven preheated to 120°C for about 15 minutes to dry and sterilise. This method is also suitable for glass bottles.

Sterilising Metal Jar Lids

To sterilise metal jar lids, start by washing them in hot, soapy water and rinsing well. Place the lids in a saucepan of boiling water and boil for 15 minutes to ensure they are thoroughly sterilised. Alternatively, metal lids can be steamed for 15–20 minutes in a steamer setup. Avoid using the oven for metal lids, as the rubber seals may be damaged by dry heat. Always use sterilised tongs to handle the lids after sterilisation to maintain cleanliness.
